"Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary." - Sir Cecil Beaton

Mission

The Cedar Grove Institute for Sustainable Communities (CGISC) supports citizens in the creation of more livable and sustainable communities. We provide multi-disciplinary technical assistance, analysis and training (with a focus on the use of public data) and develops tools that community groups can use in their efforts to promote equitable community development and wealth preservation.

We believe that public data belongs to the public, and we strive to make it accessible and understandable. Our mission is to provide evidence-driven advocacy to advance a broader vision and goals, through:

  • Developing tools to promote equitable community development;
  • Helping citizens create more livable and sustainable communities through applied multi-disciplinary research, analysis, technical assistance and public education; and
  • Assisting communities in building diverse, prosperous, and self-reliant economies that provide good jobs for all, while at the same time encouraging preservation of a region's significant natural resources and its character, history, health and culture.

In this effort, we engage community leaders, seek partnerships with community groups, and work with civil rights attorneys in order to pursue opportunities for maximum timely impact.
