Education and Outreach

In an effort to educate community activists, housing experts, civil rights attorneys, planners, GIS professionals, students and citizens about the methods and effects of institutionalized discrimination, the founders of Cedar Grove have published or presented papers and lectures at over 100 venues across the U.S. Their work is foundational to the national effort to address systemic discrimination.

Most recently, Cedar Grove's work informed a 2019 article published in the Journal of Urban Affairs (Rice/Kiner Institute summary). Lead author Leora Waldner wrote:

"Greetings, Ann! Happy New Year!!!! I hope you and Allan are well and thriving. We finally published our research on new Black-majority cities, and since we quoted your work extensively I thought you might want a copy of the article. There's no way we could have done that case study of Green Level without the prior work your team did, so I am deeply appreciative of you and what you do (#fangirl!)."

In 2016, Joyner and Parnell conducted a two-day training for HUD's Office of Systemic Investigations. Other trainings, lectures and presentations include:
